2011 Men's Golf Review

BONK FINISHES STRONG: To end his career at Pacific, Max Bonk won eight of the 14 meets Pacific competed in during the 2010-11 season, including the Northwest Conference Fall and Spring Classics. He put together a 71.9 stroke average on the way to earning All-NWC recognition for the fourth consecutive time.

During the spring half of the season Bonk won the NWC Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week award for four straight weeks. His first honor was on Mar. 22 after he won the Lewis & Clark Invitational. The second time was on Apr. 4 after claiming medalist honors at the NWC Spring Classic by four strokes. The next week he won the Whitman Invitational to earn his third honor on Apr. 9 and his final weekly award came on Apr. 16 after he won the Pacific Invitational by eight strokes.

The 2008 GCAA/Ping Division III West Region Freshman of the Year and 2009 Third Team All-American was a three time individual qualifier for the NCAA Division III National Tournament. He was selected as one of five individuals in the 2008, 2010 and 2011 Tournaments. He finished tied for 28th in 2008 and tied for 20th in 2010, but could not compete in 2011 due to a wrist injury.

“Max had a good senior season and a great four years at Pacific,” said head coach Richard Warren.

UPS AND DOWNS: As a team, Pacific had its good days and its not so good days. They won three meets over the season, including the season opening Pacific Invitational on Sept. 20, a dual against George Fox on Oct. 2 and the Lewis & Clark Invitational on Mar. 20.

However, despite having the capabilities of winning meets, the Boxers struggled with keeping a group of golfers consistent. Max Bonk stayed consistent as the No. 1 golfer throughout the season, but the last three spots fluctuated throughout the year.

When it came to NWC meets, the Boxers had showed some fight and had strong showings in the Fall and Spring Classics. After finishing second in the Fall Classic and third in Spring Classic, Pacific headed into the NWC Championships tied for second in the conference standings with the chance of placing first in the conference for the first time since 1993. After a rough round the first day of the Championship, the Boxers needed a strong finish to try and recover. Pacific improved 15 strokes as a team in their second round to compile the fourth best team total over the two days, but it was not enough and they settled for fourth.

SEASON BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, the Boxers had a 78.75 stroke average for 18 holes. The top four golfers by average were Max Bonk with a 71.9, Josh Mau’s 81.4, Ben Wright with 81.5 and Chosen Bahouth’s 81.9.

Pacific competed in 14 meets, seven in the fall and seven in the spring, and played 23 rounds of golf. They won two meets and had the best single round team total of 295 at the Whitman Invitational on Oct. 17 and the best two round team total of 604 at the Pacific Invitational on Sept. 19 and 20.

TAKING THEIR FINAL BOW: Max Bonk, Parrish Evans and Ben Wright have golfed their final rounds in Pacific uniform.

Bonk finished his career with a 71.9 average this season and winning eight meets. Evans compiled an 82.6 average and his best finish at the Willamette Valley Championship on Oct. 1 when he placed fourth. Wright had the third best average on the team with an 81.5 and his best finish was 5th place at the Willamette Invitational on Mar. 5.

These three seniors have been constants in the Pacific line-up for four years and have helped lead the team to be a consistent NWC contender each season during their careers.
