With 1,975 points on the final day of the Boxer Combined Event, Pacific University freshman 
Chris Butcher (Portland, Ore. / Wilson HS) posted 5,787 points to secure fifth place overall and a spot in the upcoming Northwest Conference Combined Event Championship, Apr. 9-10 in Spokane, Washington.
 
Butcher started the day with the fourth-fastest time in the 12-person field in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 16.56. The time gave the junior 671 points when the field moved to more field events including the discus, pole vault and the javelin.
 
In the discus, Butcher had a toss of 98-3 (29.95m) for 463 points and in the pole vault, he had a clearance of 10-8 (3.25m) for 418 points with two events to go. In the javelin, Butcher had a throw of 138-2 (42.13m) for 473 points
 
Butcher wrapped up the event with a time of 4:49.53 for 621 more points. The defending Big Sky Conference Champion Donté Robinson of Portland State won the event with a total of 6,868 points. Also, finishing ahead of Butcher were a pair of 2017 NAIA national qualifiers from Corban, Michael Schmidt (6389 pts.) and Jason Bracken (6155 pts.), who finished second and fourth. Third-place finisher was Giovanni Brown of Concordia, who had 6376 points for a NCAA Division II provisional mark.
