Meet ResultsNEWBERG, Ore. –
Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) completed an unprecedented sweep of the titles in the jumps Saturday, winning the high jump and the triple jump to lead the Pacific track and field teams on the final day of the Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships, held at Stoffer Family Stadium.
Â
Hawkins dominated both events to cruise to his second and third wins at the championships and became the first athlete in conference history to sweep all three jumping disciplines at the conference meet. He opened the day with a lifetime best in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 7.5 inches to win by over an inch. The mark moves Hawkins up to No. 5 on the Pacific all-time list, trailing only a quartet of athletes tied for the school record at 6 feet, 8 inches.Â
Â
Hawkins went on to take the triple jump in just second ever collegiate competition in the event. His winning mark of 47 feet, 3.75 inches stands as the second best mark on the Pacific all-time list, trailing only the record of 49 feet, 10.5 inches set by Randy Jones in 1979.
Â
Combined with his fifth place finish in the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds, Hawkins accounted for 34 of the Boxers' 93 points, helping Pacific place fourth in the team competition. For his efforts, Hawkins was selected as the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet.
Â
In addition to Hawkins' two titles, Pacific saw eight other athletes earn All-NWC honors with top-three finishes as well as a total of nine improvements or additions to the Pacific all-time top-10 lists.
Â
Hawkins headlined a dominant performance by the Boxers in the men's triple jump. Nate Olowo (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), competing for just the second time in the event collegiately, finished third at 46 feet even to earn All-NWC honors and move to No. 5 on the all-time list.Â
Jeremy Parkinson (Jr., Hubbard, Ore.) finished eighth with a leap of 41 feet, 6 inches.
Â
The men's 400-meter relay team of
Sean Higinbotham (So., Phoenix, Ariz.),
Kris Sapp (So., Sacramento, Calif.),
Trey Oshiro-Atabay (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) and Hawkins just missed a school record, placing second and earning All-NWC honors with a time of 41.99 seconds. The effort is the best by a Pacific relay team since 1976 and fell just short of the record of 41.80 seconds.
Â
The Pacific women bookended the day with the second fastest 1,600-meter relay team in school history. The quartet of
Hayley Palmer (Sr., Sisters, Ore.),
Dawne Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii), Marlee Chovich (So., Oregon City, Ore.) and Mikaela Bernards (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) finished sixth with a time of 4:09.59. The women's 400-meter relay team, comprised of the same individuals, ran 50.25 seconds for the fourth fastest time in school history.
Â
In the sprints, Sapp earned All-NWC honors as he finished second in a very close men's 100-meter final in a time of 10.97 seconds, losing to the 10.96 clocked by Lewis & Clark's Curtis Shirey. Sapp went on to place sixth in the 200 meters in 22.47 seconds. Oshiro-Atabay earned All-NWC honors in the 400 meters. His time of 49.74 seconds moved him into No. 6 on the Pacific all-time list with the school's best performance in the event since 1981.
Â
Daniel Wagner (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) finished fourth in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.62 seconds while Bernards placed seventh in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 16.30 seconds. The men's 1,600-meter relay team of
Conner Pappas (Jr., Heppner, Ore.), Higinbotham, Sapp and Oshiro-Atabay finished fourth in 3:22.24.
Â
In the men's field events,
Jesse Bethke (Sr., Cave Junction, Ore.) earned All-NWC honors in the men's discus, placing third with a mark of 147 feet, 11 inches. Parkinson added a fourth place finish with a clearance of 6 feet, 0.5 inches.
Â
Mackenzie Huddleston (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.) led the Pacific women in the field events, placing fourth in the javelin with her mark of 129 feet, 7 inches. Emily Sproul (Fr., Salem, Ore.) finished sixth with a throw of 126 feet, 6 inches.Â
Britta LaVoie (Jr., Spokane, Wash.) finished fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet, 10.25 inches while Katherine Popchock (Fr., Maupin, Ore.) placed 10th with a personal best of 9 feet, 10.5 inches, moving her into a tie for third on the Pacific all-time list. Shannon Hammond (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) added a ninth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 1 inch.
Â
With the NWC Championships complete, the Boxers will return home for the second of two home meets this season. Pacific will host the Pacific Twilight on Friday and Saturday at Hanson Stadium.
