Throwers Lead Boxers In Outdoor Track Season Opener

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Throwers Jesse Bethke (Sr., Cave Junction, Ore.) and Mackenzie Huddleston (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.) led a solid opening day for the Pacific track and field squads Saturday as the outdoor season kicked off with the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker at Maxwell Field.
 
Bethke opened his outdoor season by winning the men's discus with a throw of 44.76m.  The effort was just four feet off of his school record of 45.84, set last year.  Bethke went on to finish sixth in the hammer with a mark of 45.01m.  Huddleston, meanwhile, launched a career best in the women's javelin as she finished third with a mark of 40.07 meters.  She improved her No. 3 mark on the Pacific all-time list by over two meters.
 
The duo led a day that saw Pacific athletes put together 16 top-10 finishes and five athletes emerged or improve on top-10 list performances.
 
Budweiser Hawkins (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) was the Boxers' top placing male performer with two second place finishes.  He opened the outdoor season placing second in the high jump at 1.95m and second in the long jump with his mark of 6.94m.
 
Kaleb Bass (So., Slate Creek, Idaho) place second in the men's steeplechase with his time of 10:09.38, debuting him in the event at No. 7 on the Pacific all-time list.  Steve Allen (So., Svenson, Ore.) made his Pacific track debut with a time of 33:09.80 in the men's 10,000 meters, which ranks him No. 8 on the all-time list.
 
Kelsey Lee (Jr., Monroe, Wash.) made her first appearance on the Pacific top-10 list in the women's 100 meters.  Her time of 17.25 seconds ranks her No. 6.   Lee also placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:06.25.   Shannon Hammond (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) started her Pacific career with the No. 7 best mark in the high jump with her mark of 1.48 meters, which tied her for sixth place.
 
Other top placers for the Pacific men included Daniel Wagner (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii), who placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.68 seconds.  Kris Sapp (So., Sacramento, Calif.) placed second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.07 seconds.  The 400-meter relay team of Trey Oshiro-Atabay (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii), Sapp, Sean Higinbotham (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Hawkins placed third in a time of 42.97 seconds.
 
Other top placers for the Pacific women included Britta LaVoie (Jr., Spokane, Wash.), who tied for seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.17m, and Dawne Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii), who placed ninth in the 100 meters in a time of 13.22 seconds.
 
Pacific returns to action on Saturday, competing in the Mt. Hood Invitational at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.
