Shipley's Ticket Is Punched For NCAA Track And Field Championships

Tyler Shipley (So., Forest Grove, Ore.) is qualified not only once for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, but twice.

The two-time Northwest Conference champion in the men's 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters is officially entered into the national meet, which takes place Thursday through Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.Â

The men's 10,000 meters will be run on Thursday at 8:10 p.m., EDT, with the 5,000 taking place on Saturday at 5:05 p.m., EDT. Shipley and Head Coach Tim Boyce will travel back east on Tuesday.

Shipley becomes the seventh Pacific athlete to qualify for the national meet since joining NCAA Division III for the 1998-99 season and just the second male. Carson Bartlett qualified for the 2008 meet in the men's high jump, but was unable to compete due to injury.

The Forest Grove native earned his spot in the 10,000 meters with a school record-breaking performance at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Apr. 4, finishing in 30:24.44. The time stood as the No. 1 time in the nation at the Division III level for 12 hours. He enters the meet with the No. 14 best time.

Shipley's spot in the 5,000 meters came by way of another record-setting performance at the Oxy Invite last weekend. Paired in a race laden with Division I competition, Shipley shattered the Pacific record with his time of 14:27.26. The time ranks No. 19 in Division III this season and No. 18 among declared entrants into the race.

North Central's John Crain is the national leader in the 10,000 meters, having run his best of 28:52.73 at the Stanford Invitational on the same day as Shipley's performance at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Chris Stadler of Haverford in the national leader in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:01.62.
