Shipley Repeats In 10,000 Meters, Leads Boxers In NWC Championships

TACOMA, Wash. – Tyler Shipley (So., Forest Grove, Ore.) won the third Northwest Conference championship of his young career Friday, capturing his second straight men's 10,000-meter title to lead Pacific on the first day of the NWC Track and Field Championships, held at Baker Stadium.
Shipley cruised to victory with a time of 32:02.36, finishing seven seconds ahead of runner-up Kody Tarbell of George Fox. Shipley will go for his second repeat title on Saturday, competing in the 5,000 meters.
The sophomore led a day that saw eight Boxers score points and another six advance to Saturday's finals. The Pacific men enter the final day of competition in third place with 39.5 points. The Boxer women are in eighth place with a score of 10 points.
Budweiser Hawkins (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) earned All-NWC honors in the men's long jump, placing second for the second straight season with a mark of 22 feet, 5.25 inches. He went on to place fourth in the men's high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4.25 inches.
Kelson Kawai (Sr., North Kohala, Hawaii) earned All-NWC honors in his final conference meet, clearing 6 feet, 4.25 inches and earning third place on judge's decision. Kawai also placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4.75 inches. In the throws, Travis George (Sr., Grants Pass, Ore.) reset his own school record in the men's hammer by four feet, placing fifth with his throw of 171 feet, 5 inches.
In the women's pole vault, Britta LaVoie (So., Spokane, Wash.) led three Pacific point-scorers, placing fifth with a clearance of 10 feet. 10.25 inches. Emily Geddes (Fr., Bend, Ore.) placed seventh with a season best 9 feet. 10.5 inches, while Shina Chung (So., Hilo, Hawaii) placed eighth with a mark of 9 feet, 4.5 inches.
Lisa Martin (So., Gresham, Ore.) placed seventh in the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 38:49.42, moving up to No. 5 on Pacific's all-time list. McKenna Davidson (So., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) finished eighth in the women's long jump with her mark of 16 feet, 5.75 inches.
Four Pacific men's sprinters will advance to Saturday's finals. Daniel Wagner (Jr., Kailua, Hawaii) was the No. 3 qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 15.38 seconds ties him for fourth on the Pacific all-time list. Wagner was an automatic qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles, winning his heat with a time of 57.23 seconds.
Trey Oshiro-Atabay (Jr., Aiwa, Hawaii) and Sean Higginbotham (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.) both earned spots in the 400-meter final. Oshiro-Atabay was the No. 5 qualifier, placing second in the second heat in a time of 50.51 seconds. Higginbotham was the No. 8 qualifier, placing fifth in the second heat in 51.39 seconds. Kris Sapp (Fr., Sacramento, Calif.) will run in the men's 100-meter final as the No. 8 qualifier in a time of 11.21 seconds.
In the women's sprints, Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Sr., Makawao, Hawaii) will run in the 100-meter final as the No. 4 qualifier with a time of 12.86 seconds. Kelsey Lee (So., Monroe, Wash.) advanced to her first final in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:07.21 moves her to No. 4 on Pacific's all-time list.
Whitworth finished the first day in command of the men's competition with 84 points. George Fox sits in second place with 40 points. George Fox leads the women's competition with 85 points.
Saturday's competition begins with field events at 10:30 a.m., with running events commencing at noon.
