Absolutely In-Zane: Sprinter Runs To NWC Weekly Track Honors

Michael Zane's (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) historic run in the 100 meters at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open has earned the junior selection as the Northwest Conference Men's Track Student-Athlete of the Week. The award, as selected by the conference's sports information directors, was announced on Monday.

Zane won the men's 100 meters and placed second in the 200 meters among large sprint fields at the L&C Spring Break Classic, but it was the 100 meters that proved historic. Zane became the first Pacific athlete since 1979 to run under 11 seconds in the event, clocking 10.91 seconds. The last Pacific runner to drop under 11 seconds was Karry Cameron, who ran a school record 10.64 seconds (converted from 110-yard time) in 1979.

Zane's performance currently ranks No. 6 on Pacific's all-time list in the event and improves on his previous lifetime best of 11.03 seconds, which he ran early in the 2012 season. The performance is top in the NWC so far this season and is No. 11 in Division III. He went on to clock 22.32 seconds in the 200 meters, finishing second out of 23 runners.

Zane and the rest of the Pacific track and field team returns to action this weekend, competing in the Peyton Scoring Meet on Saturday at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
