McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The legend of Tyler Shipley (So., Forest Grove, Ore.) continues to grow as the sophomore toppled Pacific's 36-year old record in the men's 10,000 meters to lead the Pacific track and field teams in their first outdoor competition of the season, the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker, held Friday and Saturday at Maxwell Field.

Shipley won the race during Friday's distance events, covering the 6.2 miles in an impressive 31:06.59.  The performance was 15 seconds better than the previous school record of 31:21.1, set in 1978 by Russ Rodriguez.  Shipley was a narrow winner, however, beating second place Greg Mitchell by less than a second (31:07.06).

Shipley's performance led a strong meet for the Boxers despite much of the Saturday session being mired by cold weather and rain.

Kelson Kawai (Sr., North Kohala, Hawaii) was Pacific's only other event winner, taking the men's high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 2 inches.

Daniel Wagner (Jr.,  Kailua, Hawaii) finished second in both men's hurdles races, clocking 15.97 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 1:00.02 in the 400-meter hurdles.  Gary Fanelli (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), meanwhile, placed second in the men's 800 meters in his Pacific outdoor debut with his time of 2:01.23.

In the women's sprints, Alexis Damo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) finished fourth in the 200 meters.  Her time of 27.42 seconds tied her for seventh on Pacific's all-time list in the event.  Damo also finished fifth in the 400 meters with a collegiate best time of 1:02.77.  Cyan Agena (So., Kapolei, Hawaii) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 1:14.54.

Pacific also received a number of top-six finishes in the throws.  Jesse Bethke (Jr., Cave Junction, Ore.) finished third in the men's discus with a throw of 140 feet, 11 inches, while Aaron Koford (Sr., Wilsonville, Ore.) placed fourth in the event with a throw of 138 feet, 6 inches.

Travis George (Sr., Grants Pass, Ore.) placed sixth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 147 feet, 2 inches.  Mackenzie Huddleston (So., Milwaukie, Ore.) placed sixth in the women's javelin throw, finishing at 112 feet, 10 inches.

Pacific returns to action next weekend, participating in the Rich Allen Classic, which will be hosted by George Fox University at Colcord Field in Newberg.
