FOREST GROVE – A near national-best performance in Budweiser Hawkins' (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) first meet of the season has earned the junior jumper selection as the Northwest Conference's Men's Field Student-Athlete of the Week.  The award, selected by the conference's sports information directors, was announced Monday night.

Participating in his first meet of the year after finishing the Pacific men's basketball season, Hawkins won the long jump at the Rich Allen Classic on Saturday.  His season-opening jump was the winner at 22 feet, 5 inches.  The performance ranks Hawkins No. 4 on the Division III best list, and for a short time was the top mark in the nation.

"Trey opened his season strong, putting out his best mark on jump No. 1," said Pacific Head Coach Tim Boyce.  "We were also excited to have him join our 400-meter relay.  This has the promise to be a fine season ahead for him and the Boxers."

Hawkins was a All-NWC performer in both long jump and high jump in 2013.  He placed second in the long jump at the 2013 NWC Championships and had the lead in the competition until the final round.  Hawkins finished the year with a season best of 22 feet, 11.25 inches, ranking him No. 5 all-time for the Boxers.

Hawkins also tied for second with teammate Kelson Kawai (Sr., North Kohala, Hawaii) in the high jump and his season-best of 6 feet, 6.25 inches, is No. 6 all-time at Pacific.

A transfer in 2012 from Feather River Junior College in Quincy, Calif., Hawkins was also a two-year player for the Pacific men's basketball team and played a key role in the Boxers' first back-to-back winning seasons since the early 1990s.  Hawkins played in 21 games at guard, starting 11, and averaged 6.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Pacific track and field returns to action on Saturday, participating in the Saints Open on Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.
