The Pacific track and field teams are looking ahead to their first full home meet of the 2013 season over the traditional Luau weekend for the University.  The Boxers will host the annual Luau Meet on Saturday at Lincoln Park Stadium, with events beginning at 9 a.m.  The Boxers will continue to look towards improving qualifying times for the Northwest Conference Championships in two weeks.

BOXER BYTES
• The men's 1,600-meter relay team of Spencer Wilson, Trey Oshiro-Atabay, Daniel Wagner and Sean Valente ran a season best in their most competitive race of the season, winning the race at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational in a time of 3:24.86.  The quartet beat three other teams by less than a second.

Sarah Tuffey was one of three new Pacific qualifiers for the NWC Championships (all in the 400 meters), finishing in a Pacific season best of 1:02.83.  The time ranks Tuffey No. 8 on the Pacific all-time list, one spot ahead of her sister Emily TuffeyTrey Oshiro-Atabay and Stefan Lemak earned NWC Championships qualifying marks in the men's 400 meters.

Daniel Wagner ran a pair of season bests in the two hurdles events.  He finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in a Pacific best 56.45 seconds, allowing the sophomore to emerge at No. 10 on Pacific's all-time list.  Wagner finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a season best of 15.76 seconds.

• As part of Pacific's celebration of NCAA Division III Week, the Pacific Luau Meet will feature a pair of Special Olympics 100-meter races.  The two sessions are slated to begin around 11:45 a.m.  The races are part of Division III's nationwide partnership with Special Olympics.

LAST WEEK'S MEET RECAP
LINFIELD JENN BOYMAN MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL

An exciting winning performance by Pacific's men's 1,600-meter relay team led three event winners for the Boxers Saturday at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational, held at Maxwell Field.

Pacific succeeded in pulling ahead in a tight four-team race with the team of Spencer Wilson (So., La Pine, Ore.), Trey Oshiro-Atabay (So., Aiea, Hawaii), Daniel Wagner (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Sean Valente (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) winning with a season best time of 3:24.86.

The performance capped a trio of winning performances for the Boxers.  Rachel Schreiber (So., Longmont, Colo.) opened the day with her victory in the women's 1,500 meters, clocking a time of 4:59.60.  She led a race that saw Pacific claim four of the top five places.  Jilinda Franklin (Sr., Fort Jones, Calif.) was second in 5:16.94.  Ally Shackelford (Jr., Portland, Ore.) finished fourth in 5:24.68 and Sidney Davis (Fr., Redmond, Ore.) was fifth in 5:26.47.  Schrieber also went on to finish second in the 800 meters in a time of 2:25.18.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
PACIFIC A CONTENDER IN THE LONG RELAY?:
While such a thing may have been out of the equation in recent years, it looks as if the Boxers might have a men's 1,600-meter relay team capable of making some noise at the NWC Championships.  The Boxers' squad of Spencer Wilson, Trey Oshiro-Atabay, Daniel Wagner and Sean Valente beat a very competitive field at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational, running a season best of 3:24.86.  The Boxers outdistanced the next three teams from Warner Pacific, Clackamas CC and Linfield by just one second.  The time is the fastest run by a Pacific relay team since the 2011 season and is the second fastest time in the NWC this season behind the 3:23.34 run by Whitworth at the Buc Scoring Invite on Mar. 21.

ANOTHER TUFFEY SLATED FOR CONFERENCE MEET ACTION: Pacific is likely to have a sister act competing in the 400 meters at the NWC Championships now that Sarah Tuffey (Jr., Valencia, Calif.) has qualified.  The elder Tuffey ran a Pacific season best of 1:02.83 at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational in addition to running legs on both the Boxers' women's 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams.  Sarah Tuffey's performance edged her just above her sister Emily Tuffey (So., Valencia, Calif.), who owns a season best of 1:03.23 run at the Mar. 16 Wildcat Open.  The two sisters have regularly appeared on back-to-back legs on both Pacific women's relay teams.  Emily ran the second leg and Sarah ran the third in the Boxers' season best 400-meter relay race, running 51.26 seconds on Saturday.  Emily has run leadoff and Sarah has run the second leg on the Boxers' top-three 1,600-meter teams this season.  The squad, which had Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Jr., Makakilo, Hawaii) on the third leg and Dannika Sullivan (Fr., Portland, Ore.) on anchor, ran 4:24.17 at Linfield on Saturday.

ADD CONFERENCE QUALIFIERS: In addition to Sarah Tuffey, Pacific added two other NWC Championships qualifiers in the men's 400 meters.  Trey Oshiro-Atabay qualified for the 400 with his fourth place time of 50.82 seconds.  He finished just behind teammate Sean Valente, who also ran a season best with his third place time of 50.82 seconds.  Stefan Lemak (Fr., Los Altos, Calif.) also qualified for the NWC Championships in the one-lapper, placing ninth in 51.31 seconds.  Oshiro-Atabay is now qualifed for the NWC Championships in the 400 meters and the long jump.  The 400 is Lemak's first conference qualifier.

CONTINUED STRENGTH IN THE HURDLES: Daniel Wagner (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) continues to make measured improvement in both hurdles races and could very well be a contender for a title in both disciplines.  Wagner placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at Saturday's Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational with a Pacific season best time of 56.45 seconds.  The effort ranks fourth best in the NWC so far this season and put Wagner No. 10 on Pacific's all-time list in the race.  Wagner also ran a season best in 110-meter hurdles with a fourth place time of 15.76 seconds.  That performance currently ranks sixth best in the NWC.  Pacific enters the week with five athletes qualified for the NWC Championships in the 110-meter hurdles: Wagner, Michael Hunker (Sr., Cornelius, Ore.), Ted Wogan (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.), Nathan Farrell (Fr., Warrenton, Ore.) and Aaron Koford (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.).  All but Koford have also qualified for the NWC Championships in the 400-meter hurdles.

A RECORD EFFORT FOR KAWAI: The Pacific coaching staff has always known that Kelson Kawai was capable of a school record effort in the men's high jump, having jumped over the 6 feet, 8 inch height in high school.  The junior finally put his name on the Pacific record board at the Mar. 31 Peyton Scoring Meet, finishing second with a clearance of 6 feet, 8 inches.  In doing so, Kawai tied the record set by Mike Gordon in 1976 and equaled by Kelly LcClaire in 1993 and Carson Bartlett in 2008.  In addition, Kawai's mark ranks as the eighth best mark among NCAA Division III athletes this season.  The national leader is Carl Joseph of UMass Boston, who has cleared 7 feet, 1 inch.

CLOSING ON A RECORD AS A FRESHMAN: A phenomenal freshman cross country and track and field season for Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) continues to get better as he continues to move higher on the Boxers' all-time lists.  Shipley's latest impressive performance came at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open where he won his first ever track 5,000 meter race in a conference-best time 15:00.47.  The time ranks as the second best time in school history.  Only Roger Hansen has run faster for the Boxers, running a blistering 14:36.8 back in 1976.  The effort earned Shipley selection as the NWC Men's Track Student-Athlete of the Week.  A qualifier for the NWC Championships in both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters, Shipley owns the league's second best mark in the 10,000 with his 32:25.22 run at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker back of Mar. 1.  Shipley, a Forest Grove native and Forest Grove High School graduate, opened his college career by earning Second Team All-NWC and All-West Region honors in cross country and earning an invitation to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.

LINCOLN PARK TO HOST BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Affirming the facility's reputation as a high-caliber venue for track and field, Pacific University's Lincoln Park Stadium will host the 2013 Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships.  The meet will take place May 8-11.  Portland State will be the host school for the meet.  The Vikings do not have a track to call their own and evaluated a number of Portland-area venues before settling on Forest Grove and Lincoln Park.  The meet was announced in Ken Goe's track and field notebook in Tuesday's edition of The Oregonian.  The article can be read at bit.ly/ZxQ6SZ.

SEASON PREVIEW: The complete 2013 Pacific track and field season preview can be read at bit.ly/10bXV6N.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS: For the second straight season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships.  In 2013, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet.  Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
