LAST WEEK'S MEET RECAP
PEYTON SCORING MEET

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
A RECORD EFFORT FOR KELSON: The Pacific coaching staff has always known that
Kelson Kawai was capable of a school record effort in the men's high jump, having jumped over the 6 feet, 8 inch height in high school. The junior finally put his name on the Pacific record board at Saturday's Peyton Scoring Meet, finishing second with a clearance of 6 feet, 8 inches. In doing so, Kawai tied the record set by Mike Gordon in 1976 and equaled by Kelly LcClaire in 1993 and Carson Bartlett in 2008. In addition, Kawai's mark ranks as the fourth best mark among NCAA Division III athletes this season. The national leader is Carl Joseph of UMass Boston, who has cleared 7 feet, 1 inch.
Kawai has now qualified for the NWC Championships in all three jumps and ranks near the top of the conference top marks list in each category. In addition to his league-leading mark in the high jump, Kawai ranks third in the triple jump at 44 feet, 4.75 inches and 12th in the long jump at 20 feet, 10.5 inches.
CLOSING ON A RECORD AS A FRESHMAN: A phenomenal freshman cross country and track and field season for
Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) continues to get better as he continues to move higher on the Boxers' all-time lists. Shipley's latest impressive performance came at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open where he won his first ever track 5,000 meter race in a conference-best time 15:00.47. The time ranks No. 21 on the Division III best list, but is also the second best time in school history. Only Roger Hansen has run faster for the Boxers, running a blistering 14:36.8 back in 1976. The effort earned Shipley selection as the NWC Men's Track Student-Athlete of the Week. A qualifier for the NWC Championships in both the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters, Shipley owns the league's second best mark in the 10,000 with his 32:25.22 run at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker back of Mar. 1. Shipley, a Forest Grove native and Forest Grove High School graduate, opened his college career by earning Second Team All-NWC and All-West Region honors in cross country and earning an invitation to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
VERSATILITY IN THE DISTANCES: After missing most of her freshman track season due to injury,
Rachel Schreiber (So., Longmont, Colo.) is making the most of a sophomore season by showing she can be a NWC Championships contender at a variety of distances. Schreiber added the 800 meters to her conference qualified races at the Mar. 23 Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open with a time of 2:22.41. The time ranks as the fourth fastest in school history and fifth best in the NWC this season. Two weeks ago, Schreiber ran the third fastest 1,500 meters time in school history with a time of 4:50.97 at the Oregon Preview. She opened the outdoor track and field season by running the sixth fastest time in school history in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:36.20 at the Mar. 2 Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker.
ADD DISTANCES: Where Pacific scored just one point in the distances at last year's NWC Championships, the Boxers appear on their way in their goal to boost scoring in the long events. In addition to
Tyler Shipley's qualifers in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, the Boxers also have men's qualifiers in
Dan Flora (Sr., North Bend, Ore.) and
Rudy Sanchez (Jr., Albany, Ore.) in the 10,000 meters. In addition to Rachel Schrieber's three women's distance qualifying marks, the Boxers have qualified both
Kiersten Iwai (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and
Jilinda Franklin in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and have also qualified
Ally Shackelford (Jr., Portland, Ore.) in the 10,000 meters.
A BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE IN THE THROWS: Jeese Bethke (So., Cave Junction, Ore.) succeeded to put together a breakout performance in the men's discus at Saturday's Peyton Scoring Meet. After topping out in his freshman season with a throw of 127 feet, 7 inches, Bethke finished second on Saturday with a 10-foot collegiate best with his mark of 137 feet, 9 inches. The performance gave the Pacific men their first NWC Championships qualifier in the throws this season.
TUFFEYING IT OUT IN THE SPRINTS: In her sophomore year,
Emily Tuffey (So., Valencia, Calif.) has shown the potential to add yet another scorer for the Boxers in the women's sprints. Tuffey emerged at No. 10 on Pacific's all-time list for the 200 meters with her time of 27.83 seconds at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. The performance is just short of the conference championships qualifying time of 27.40 seconds. Meanwhile, Tuffey has qualified for the NWC meet in the 400 meters, leading the team with her time of 1:03.23 from the Mar. 16 Wildcat Open. In addition, Tuffey has played a key role in both of Pacific's women's relays. She anchored the Boxers' top 400-meter relay of the season. The team ran 51.52 seconds at the Mar. 16 Wildcat Open, which is the seventh best relay performance in school history. She also ran leadoff on the Boxers' 1,600-meter relay team which ran 4:17.99 at the Mar. 9 Lane Preview, which is also seventh best in school history.
LINCOLN PARK TO HOST BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Affirming the facility's reputation as a high-caliber venue for track and field, Pacific University's Lincoln Park Stadium will host the 2013 Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place May 8-11. Portland State will be the host school for the meet. The Vikings do not have a track to call their own and evaluated a number of Portland-area venues before settling on Forest Grove and Lincoln Park. The meet was announced in Ken Goe's track and field notebook in Tuesday's edition of The Oregonian. The article can be read at bit.ly/ZxQ6SZ.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS: For the second straight season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships. In 2013, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet. Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
