Shipley Wins 10,000 Meters, Two School Records Fall On Day One NWC Meet

Postrace Interview With Tyler Shipley
SALEM, Ore. – The first of what will be many championships in the career of
Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.) and a pair of school records highlighted and excellent first day for the Pacific track and field teams at the Northwest Conference Championships, held Friday at the Charles Bowles Track.
Shipley completed the first leg of a potential double conference title in the long distances, closing the day with his victory in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 31:58.63. The performance moved the freshman to No. 3 on the Pacific all-time list in the event and was enough to hold off second place Matt Klein of Puget Sound by nine seconds. Shipley is also entered in the men's 5,000 meters, which will be run on Saturday.
Pacific also picked up a pair of school record performances.
Travis George (Jr., Grants Pass, Ore.) threw for a record of 160 feet, 6.75 inches to finish 10th in the men's hammer, bettering the previous record of 155 feet, 8 inches, set by Murphy Busek in 2010.
Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Jr., Makakilo, Hawaii) significantly lowered her own school record in the women's 100 meters, qualifying third for Saturday's final in a time of 12.54 seconds. The previous record of 12.67 seconds was set at last year's NWC Championships.
The win by Shipley and placing performances by four other athletes allowed the Pacific men to finished day one in fourth place with a total of 28 points. The Boxer women have yet to score, but have three athletes qualified for the Saturday's running event finals.
Budweiser Hawkins (So., Las Vegas, Nev.) added eight points to the Pacific cause with his second place finish in the men's long jump with a season best of 22 feet, 11.25 inches.
Jesse Bethke (So., Cave Junction, Ore.) finished sixth in the men's discus with a throw of 138 feet, 8.5 inches.
Dan Flora (Sr., North Bend, Ore.), meanwhile, joined Shipley in the top-eight of 10,000 meters, placing sixth in a lifetime best 32:53.02 that ranks No. 6 all-time for the Boxers.
Pacific also advanced nine men to Saturday's running event finals.
Michael Zane (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) became the Boxers' fastest athlete in the 200 meters in 37 years, winning his heat and qualifying second with a time of 22.06 seconds.
Sean Valente (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) led three Pacific qualifiers in the 400 meters, taking the third position with a season best of 50.33 seconds.
Trey Oshiro-Atabay (So., Aiea, Hawaii) qualified sixth in a season best 50.24 seconds and
Stefan Lemak (Fr., Los Altos, Calif.) qualified seventh in a season best 50.72 seconds.
Michael Hunker (Sr., Cornelius, Ore.) led three Pacific qualifiers in the 110-meter hurdles, qualifying fourth in a lifetime best 15.49 seconds.
Daniel Wagner (So., Kailua, Hawaii) qualified fifth in the same time of 15.49 seconds. The performances tie Hunker and Wagner for No. 6 on Pacific's all-time list.
Ted Wogan (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) qualified eighth in a time of 16.22 seconds. Wagner qualified in third in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.57 seconds while Wogan qualified sixth in a season best 57.80 seconds.
Joining Aken-Pagdilao in Saturday's women's running event finals will be
Sarah Tuffey (Jr., Valencia, Calif.) and
Dannika Sullivan (Fr., Portland, Ore.). Tuffey ran the third fastest time in school history in the 400 meters, qualifying sixth in a time of 1:00.55. Sullivan, meanwhile, moved up to No. 6 on the Pacific all-time list in the 400-meter hurdles, qualifying seventh in a time of 1:08.45.
Action for the second day of the NWC Championships will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. In addition to finals in the remaining running events, field finals will take place in the men's javelin, high jump, shot put and triple jump as well as the women's hammer, triple jump, pole vault and discus.
