MEET RECAP
LEWIS & CLARK SPRING BREAK OPEN
Jenna Matsumoto (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) led a solid day for Pacific's hurdlers with a pair of season bests on Mar. 24, leading the efforts of the Pacific track & field team at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open, held at the Eldon Fix Track.
Matsumoto was the winner in a 400-meter hurdles race that saw three Pacific athletes establish seasonal bests. Matsumoto won in 1:07.48 to post a one-second improvement. Kori Bellwood (So., Yamhill, Ore.) placed third in 1:08.23, Jessica Head (So., North Bend, Ore.) was fourth with season best time of 1:09.69 and Chloe Hallyburton (Jr., Dayton, Ore.) placed sixth in a season best time of 1:10.38.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Matsumoto turned in a season best time with her second place finish of 16.15 seconds. The mark is a lifetime best and betters her No. 3 time on the Pacific all-time list.
Hallyburton followed her hurdles performance up with a second place finish in the high jump with a season-best effort of 4 feet, 11 inches.
In addition, Pacific's women's 400-meter relay team of Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (So., Makikilo, Hawaii), Bellwood, Matsumoto and Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) equaled their season best, placing second in 50.41 seconds to match the No. 2 all-time mark they ran at last week's Pacific Preview.
Freshman sprinter Michael Zane (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) found himself edging closer to record territory in the men's 100 meters. Zane finished second with a time of 11.03 seconds, ranking him seventh on Pacific's all-time list and making him just the third Pacific athlete since 1979 to run faster than 11.05 seconds.
Michael Hunker (Jr., Cornelius, Ore.) placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 15.78 seconds and Jerry Sanchez (Jr., Mecca, Calif.) placed third in the 5,000 meters with a season best of 15:56.21. Joe Deardorff (Jr., Independence, Ore.) was just behind Sanchez in fourth place in a season best 16:02.65.
Jilinda Franklin (Jr., Fort Jones, Calif.) matched Sanchez's third place time in the 5,000 meters, taking third in the women's side of the event with a time of 19:37.84.
In the process, Pacific added four more athletes to the ever-growing list of qualifiers to the NWC Championships in April. Roberta Kelley (So., Warrenton, Ore.), Nicole Brown (Jr., Wailuku, Hawaii) and Shauna Kinilau (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii) all qualified in the women's triple jump. Spencer Wilson (Fr., La Pine, Ore.) earned qualifying marks in the 200 meters and 400 meters, Travis George (So., Grants Pass, Ore.) added a qualifying mark in the discus and Annette Highley (Fr., Juneau, Alaska) qualified in the women's shot put.
PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
HE HAS THE NEED FOR SPEED: The young speed of Michael Zane is showing potential to be record setting for the Boxers as his career continues. Zane ran a time of 11.03 seconds, placing second at the Mar. 24 Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open behind the 10.98 seconds ran by Western Oregon's Kendale Hamlett. The time is the seventh fastest run in Pacific history and he became just the third Pacific athlete over the past 30 years to run under 11.05 seconds, joining teammate Vince Mull (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Rich Torquato. Zane's time ranks third best in the NWC this season and is the 36th best among NCAA Division III athletes so far this season. Zane has also qualified for the NWC Championships in the 200 meters. His season best of 22.67 seconds, ran at the season-opening Linfield Icebreaker on Mar. 2, is fifth best in the NWC.
MASTERING THE BARRIERS: Jenna Matsumoto's senior season is shaping up to be one where she could challenge for the NWC title in her specialty, the hurdles. Matsumoto won the 400-meter hurdles at the Mar. 24 Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open, clocking a season best of 1:07.48. She led a race heavy laden with Pacific runners as four Boxers finished in the the top-six (see below). Earlier in the day, Matsumoto finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, clokcing a personal best time of 16.15 seconds. The time was a slight improvement of her No. 3 time on Pacific's all-time list in the event. Matsumoto is looking to improve on a pair of solid performances at last year's NWC Championships. Matsumoto finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles.
ADD WOMEN'S HURDLES: For the second year in a row, things are lining up for the Boxers to score some major points in the women's hurdles. Jenna Matsumoto's win in the 400-meter hurdles led four Pacific athletes who finished in the top-six, two of which set new personal bests. Kori Bellwood finished third with a time of 1:08.23 while Jessica Head was fourth in a personal best time of 1:09.69. The effort moved Head to No. 5 on the Pacific all-time list in the event. Chloe Hallyburton followed close behind with a sixth place time of 1:10.38. That time allowed the junior to move into No. 6 on the all-time list for the event. All four athletes are qualified for trhe NWC Championships in the 400-meter hurdles, while both Matsumoto and Bellwood are also qualified in the 100-meter hurdles.
ADD MEN'S HURDLES: Not to be outdone by their female counterparts, the Pacific men are also looking to be well represented at the NWC Championships in the men's hurdles events. Michael Hunker placed second in the 110-meter hurdles at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open with a time of 15.78 seconds, just off of his season best of 15.54 seconds that he ran at the Mar. 17 Pacific Preview. To date, three Pacific men have earned championships qualifying times in the hurdles events. Hunker is qualified in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles events. Daniel Wagner (Fr., Kailua, Hawaii) has qualified in the 110-meter hurdles while Ted Wogan (Fr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) is qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with the Boxers' season best time of 57.80 seconds.
IS A RECORD IMMINENT IN THE RELAY?: For the past two weeks, the Pacific women's 400-meter relay has come up just short of the school record in the event, leading some to believe that a new record is just around the corner. The team of Kelli Aken-Pagdilao, Kori Bellwood, Jenna Matsumoto and Nicole Smith (Sr., Waipahu, Hawaii) ran the second best time in school history with a mark of 51.41 seconds at the Mar. 17 Pacific Preview. The team of Aken-Pagdilao, Bellwood, Matsumoto and Hayley Palmer (Fr., Sisters, Ore.) equalled that time at the Mar. 24 Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. Both performances are just short of the school record of 50.33 seconds, which was set at last year's Pacific Twilight by Aken-Pagdilao, Bellwood, Matsumoto and Smith.
TRIPLE THREAT IN THE TRIPLE JUMP: Pacific picked up three qualifiers for the NWC Championships in the triple jump at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. Roberta Kelley led the way with her mark of 32 feet, 3.5 inches, which ranks the sophomore No. 4 on Pacific's all-time list. Nicole Brown (Jr., Wailuku, Hawaii) qualified with her mark of 32 feet and Shawna Kinilau (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii) was a qualifier with her mark of 31 feet, 10 inches. The performances by Brown and Kinilau rank fifth and sixth, respectively, on the Boxers' all-time list.
QUALIFYING STANDARDS CHANGE: For the first time this season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships. In 2012, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet. Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
