• To date, a total of 25 Pacific athletes have qualified for the NWC Championships, which takes place Apr. 20 & 21 in Tacoma, Wash.  Fourteen men have qualified in nine different events, while 11 women have qualified in 11 separate events.

MEET RECAPS
PACIFIC PREVIEW

Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) and Travis George (So., Grants Pass, Ore.) put together a pair of impressive victories on the home track Saturday, leading Pacific in their own Pacific Preview meet, held at Lincoln Park Stadium.

OREGON PREVIEW
Hurdlers Michael Hunker and Daniel Wagner (Fr., Kailua, Hawaii) led the way for a small contingent of seven Pacific athletes who earned entries into the prestigious Oregon Preview Sunday, held at Hyaward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

The pair each put together seventh place finishes in their sections of the 110-meter hurdles on a day when the Hayward Field crowd saw an interesting weather combination of sun, wind, rain, snow and hail.  Hunker finished with a season best time of 15.54 seconds in the first section, while Wagner had a season best time of 16.08 seconds.

Michael Zane (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) scored a sixth place finish in the second section of the 200 meters in his first ever Hayward Field meet, registering 22.97 seconds.  Kelson Kawai placed eighth in the high jump with his leap of 6 feet, 1.5 inches, while Jerry Sanchez (Jr., Mecca, Calif.) was 24th in the 3,000 meters with his time of 9:05.97.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
100 METER RECORD FALLS AGAIN: It is just four meets into the season and Kelli-Aken Pagdilao has reset her own school record in the 100 meters.  Aken-Pagdilao ran a time of 12.77 seconds at Saturday's Pacific Preview, placing third and dropping her own school record of 12.85 seconds.  She ran the previous record in the preliminary heats of the 2011 NWC Championships, where she bettered a record set two minutes earlier by teammate Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii).  Saturday's performance ranks third in the NWC to date this season.  Aken-Pagdilao also owns the Boxers' best mark in the 200 meters this season with a time of 27.10 seconds.

NEW FOUND ABILITIES: When she competed in her first heptathlon at the end of the 2011 season, Nicole Smith (exhibited some potential that coaches had not seen in her first four years at Pacific.  This year, Smith's strength for the Boxers may not be in the sprints, but in the heptathlon.  She won the seven-event discipline at the Pacific Preview wirth a score of 3,781 points, the third best total in the conference to date.  Smith won three of the seven events, which included personal best and NWC Championships individual qualifying marks in the long jump (17-0) and the javelin (117-10).  She was also a winner of the 200 meters in 28.08 seconds.  Smith currently owns the Boxers' best mark in the heptathlon, long jump and javelin as well as the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.11

STRENGTH IN THE HURDLES: As the 2012 season commenced, it was clear that the hurdles would be one of Pacific's strongest events.  That has certainly come to fruition as eight Boxers have qualified for the NWC Championships in the hurdles disciplines.  Michael Hunker current leads a very strong corps of men's hurdlers, owning the Boxers' season best in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.54 seconds at the Pacific Preview.  The mark is currently the top time in the NWC.  Ted Wogan leads the Pacific men in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 57.80 seconds, fifth best in the NWC.  Pacific enters the week with five men's qualifiers in the 110-meter hurdles and three in the 400-meter event.

Jenna Matsumoto leads Pacific in the 100-meter hurdles, having run a time of 16.55 seconds.  Kori Bellwood ran 17.02 seconds at the Mar. 10 PLU Invitational, moving her into No. 5 on the Boxers' all-time list at the distance.  Bellwood leads the Pacific women in the 400-meter hurdles.  Her time of 1:07.44 at the Pacific Preview is fourth best in school history.  Jessica Head (So., North Bend, Ore.) and Chloe Hallyburton (Jr., Dayton, Ore.) also improved their marks on the all-time list at the Pacific Preview.  Head moved to No. 5 with her time of 1:10.42, while Hallyburton is sixth with a time of 1:11.30.  To date,  the Pacific women have three qualifiers each in the 100-meter and 400-meter barriers events.

TOPS IN THE DISCUS: Pacific's lone men's victory in the discus as Travis George captured the discus at Saturday's Pacific Preview.  George uncorked a throw of 127 feet, 6 inches.  The mark is the third best for the Boxers this season behind the conference-qualifying mark of 131 feet, 8 inches thrown by Aaron Koford at the Mar. 10 PLU Invitational.

MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH: Pacific's pair of decathletes just missed NWC Championships qualifying marks with their performances in the Pacific Preview multi-event on Friday and Saturday.  Aaron Koford placed fourth with a score of 5,251 points, while Ted Wogan placed fifth with a score of 5,135 points.  Koford's point toal is just short of the NWC qualifying mark of 5,266 points, but his beat performance of 5,274 points will qualify the sophomore for April's multi-event meet.  Koford won the 100 meters in a time of 11.70 seconds and the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 10 inches.  He also placed second in two individual events on day one, the long jump (19-05.) and the shot put (37-9.25). Wogan placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.24 seconds) and the pole vault (11-1.75) and placed third in the 100 meters (11.92).

REAR RECORD RELAY PERFORMANCE: The same crew of runners who set the Boxers' women's 400-meter relay record last year is already close to setting another record this season.  Kelli Aken-Pagdilao, Kori Bellwood, Jenna Matsumoto and Nicole Smith finished with a time of 50.41 seconds at the Pacific Preview, ranking No. 2 all-time.  The same quartet ran 50.33 seconds at last year's Pacific Twilight.  It was the second time the previous record of 52.01 second had been broken that season.  In addition, the team of Smith, Bellwood, Hayley Palmer (Fr., Sisters, Ore.) and Mariah Ariola (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) ran 51.86 seconds at the season-opening Linfield Icebreaker on Mar. 2, which is the fifth fastest time in school history.

GOING THE DISTANCE: She is just three weeks into her first college track season and Rachel Schreiber is getting the chance to show what she is capable of.  Schreiber has qualified for the NWC Championships in both 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters, running her season bests at the Linfield Icebreaker on Mar. 2.  Her 1,500 meters time of 4:57.79 stands 12th best in the NWC and No. 6 on Pacific's all-time list.  Her 5,000 meters time of 18:47.90 is also sixth all-time and is currently seventh in the conference this season.  On Sunday, Schreiber got to test herself against a talented field in the 3,000 meters at the Oregon Preview, running 10:42.43 in a field that included a pair of Oregon Track Club Elite performers in Sally Kipyego and Julia Lucas as well as a number of Division I runners.  Schreiber finished the 2011 cross country season as one of the Boxers' top-two scoring runners and ran the fifth best time in school history at 6,000 meters with her time of 23:23.77 at the NWC Championships.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS CHANGE: For the first time this season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships.  In 2012, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet.  Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
