Iwai Wins 10,000 Meters, Lead Boxers At Boyman Invite

MMcMINNVILLE, Ore. – Kiersten Iwai (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) won the 10,000 meters in her first attempt at the event Saturday and John Fredericks (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) won the pole vault for a second straight meet to lead Pacific's performances at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Memorial Track & Field Invitational, held at Maxwell Field.

Iwai led the first of five competitors with a time of 41:39.02, earning a qualifying mark for the Northwest Conference Championships in three weeks. It was her first attempt at the distance as a college athlete. Fredericks, meanwhile, finished in a three-way tie for first in the pole vault with Oregon Tech's Micah Johnson and Clackamas CC's Jared Hippler, with all three vaulters clearing 12 feet, 11.5 inches.

Iwai and Fredericks the only event winner for the Boxers in non-scoring meet, while five other competitors came in as runners-up in six other events.

Kasey Fisher (So., Denair, Calif.) finished second in two events, running the 100-meter hurdles in 16.62 seconds while notching a season best in the ole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 6 inches. Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) placed second in the 200 meters with a season best of 26.92 seconds. Sam Lee (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) was also second in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:56.97.

Taylor Hickson (Fr., Red Bluff, Calif.) led three Pacific men who notched second place finishes. Hickson placed second in his first attempt at the triple jump this season, establishing a NWC Championship qualifying mark of 41 feet, 7.25 inches. Michael Hunker (So., Cornelius, Ore.) was second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.88 seconds and Ryan Culp (Jr., Woodburn, Ore.) was second in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 5 inches.

The Boxers also saw the 400-meter relay team of Craig Bailey (Fr., Fairfield, Calif.), Alex Florence (Sr., Tigard, Ore.), Hunker and Aaron Koford (Fr., Wilsonville, Ore.) finish second out of six teams in 43.93 seconds.

Other performances of note included Nathan Gilpin (Sr., Oregon City, Ore.), who set a season best in the 400-meter hurdles with his third place time of 59.34 seconds. Kelson Kawai (Fr., North Kohala, Hawaii) set a season best in the high jump, finishing third with a mark 6 feet, 3.5 inches. Travis George (Fr., Grants Pass, Ore.) set a 20-foot best in the hammer throw with a mark of 140 feet, 3 inches. Murphy Busek (Sr., Mountain View, Hawaii) was third in the hammer with his mark of 142 feet, 10 inches.

Pacific returns home next weekend for the second of three meets at Lincoln Park Stadium. The Boxers will host the annual Luau Meet on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
