YAKIMA, Wash. – Despite taking two of three doubles matches, Pacific saw their 2010 women’s tennis season end with a sweep in the singles by Willamette to finish off a 5-2 victory for the Bearcats in the Northwest Conference Tournament’s fifth place match at the Yakima Tennis Club.

With the loss, the Boxers finish the season at 6-14 overall.  Willamette finishes at 12-9 overall and claims fifth place in the conference tournament.

At the start, it looked as if the Boxers would have the momentum after the doubles matches.  Cat Goya (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (So., Mililani, Hawaii) opened by taking an 8-5 decision in the No. 1 match over Natalia Agarycheva and Shannon Palmer.  Dayna Wong (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Rachel Mizuno (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) followed suit, scoring a convincing 8-2 victory over Alyssa Morrison and Jamie Slonaker in the No. 2 flight.

Willamette finally pulled their first win in the No. 3 match, taking an 8-2 victory over Stephanie Velligas (Jr., Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Michelle Soga (Fr., Kahului, Hawaii).

That final match provided all of the momentum that the Bearcats needed to sweep through the four contested singles matches to take the win.  Agarycheva and Goya engaged in a close match in the No. 1 flight.  Trailing after the first set, Goya came back to take a second set tiebreaker and win 7-6.  In the end, Agarycheva had more steam to take the 6-1, 6-7 (7-8), 6-2 win.

The remaining three matches were straight set affairs.  Palmer scored a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Yoshimoto at No. 2, Huber was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Wong at No. 3 and Morrison collected a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mizuno at No. 4.  The two remaining finishes were left unfinished.
