FOREST GROVE – Pacific picked up their first victory of the 2010 season in grand style Sunday, taking all but one singles match in an 8-1 rout of the College of Idaho in men’s tennis action at the Holce Tennis Courts.

The Boxers (1-1) coasted through the doubles sets, opening the way for the win.  Spencer Hing (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Micah Leo (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) were 8-4 winners over Mark Malmstrom and Max Nguyen at No. 1, while Patrick Kinghorn (Jr., Salem, Ore.) and Scott Kawamura (Fr., Aiea, Hawaii) cruised to an 8-3 victory over Jaron Tietsort and Thomas McMahon at No. 2. 

Eric Furuya (So., Portland, Ore.) and Kolin Wong (Fr., Captain Cook, Hawaii) were challenged by James Collet and Kevin Writer in the No. 3 flight, but the Pacific tandem came away with the 8-6 victory.

Four Pacific’s five singles victories were straight set efforts.  Michael Okada (Jr., Hilo, Hawaii) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in the No. 1 match over Malmstrom, Hector Alcayde (So., Wahiawa, Hawaii) was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Tietsort at No. 3 and Nhat Nguyen (Jr., Salem, Ore.) scored a 6-0, 7-6 decision over Jon Weese at No. 6.   Max Nguyen managed to take Furuya to a third set in the No. 2 flight, but Pacific prevailed in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Writer earned the College of Idaho’s (0-2) only victory of the match, going three sets in the No. 5 match to beat Kawamura 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.

Pacific will now take to the road for their next three matches as Northwest Conference play commences.  The Boxers play at Linfield on Friday followed by Lewis & Clark on Saturday.  College of Idaho does not play again for a month, returning to action on Sat., Mar. 6 at NCAA Division I member Utah State.
