Pin At 133 Pounds For
14th Win Of Season
Pacific won the first three matches, but Simon Fraser came back to win six of the last seven to take a 28-18 victory over the Boxers in their final dual match of the season
ASHLAND, Ore. – Pacific opened their dual with Simon Fraser with solid victories in the first three matches, but Simon Fraser roared back to take six of the last seven matches to beat the Boxers 28-18 in the Boxers’ final dual match of the season in men’s wrestling action at McNeal Pavilion.
The Boxers opened the match with three hard earned victories that gave Pacific a 12-0 lead out of the gate. Zach Binkerd (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) started things with an exciting overtime match at 125 pounds. Binkerd scored the first takedown in the extra period to take the 6-4 decision over Thomas Ostapawich. Andrew Wolfe (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) followed up with his team-leading 14th victory and fifth pin of the season, going into the second period to down J.J. Lum at 133 pounds.
Seth Honl (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) then added to his impressive second half of the season, allowing Raj Virdi just one takedown in a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds. The victory was Honl’s 12th of the season and his 11th since Jan. 1.
From that point, however, the match belonged to the Clan, who entered the match ranked 10th in the NAIA national poll. Mike Cappus opened the run with the first of three pins for the Clan, going into the third round to shut down Kody Kramer (Jr., Oroville, Wash.) at 149 pounds, while decisions from Daniel Swain at 157 pounds and Max Arcand at 165 pounds tied the match at 12-12.
Arminder Virk gave the Clan the lead for good with his 20-8 major decision over Jordan Branson (Jr., Sheridan, Ore.) at 174 pounds. Clete Hanson and Manjot Sandhu assured the victory with a pair of pins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively, both in under 40 seconds.
With the loss, Pacific finishes their dual meet season at 0-14 overall. The Boxers will wrap up the season on Sat., Feb. 20, when they take part in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Minneapolis.
