FOREST GROVE – Playing their first home match in Forest Grove in two years, Pacific put together a strong showing in the singles to score a 6-3 Northwest Conference women’s tennis victory over Pacific Lutheran in both team’s season opener at the Holce Tennis Courts.

The Boxers (1-0, 1-0 NWC) won four of six singles matches, two in three-set showdowns, to secure the match after taking two of three doubles sets to open the afternoon.

The No. 1 tandem of Cat Goya (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Rachel Mizuno (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) set the pace in the doubles, coming back from three sets down to force a tiebreaker and take the victory from Ashley Coats and Cora Wigen 9-8.  Stephanie Velligas (Jr., Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Dawn Greene (So., Mililani, Hawaii) added a second victory at No. 3, downing Ali Burnside and Caitlyn Hoerr 8-5.

Heidi Weston and Kristina Aarsvold gave the Lutes (0-1, 0-1 NWC) their lone doubles tally, winning the No. 2 match 8-5 over Dayna Wong (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (So., Mililani, Hawaii).

Goya and Mizuno were straight set winners for the Boxers In singles.  Goya allowed Coats just two games won in a 6-2, 6-0 rout at No. 1, while Mizuno proved cool and collected for a freshman in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Weston in the No. 4 flight.  Yoshimoto went three sets with Wigen before taking the 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 while Velligas outlasted Aarsvold in a super tiebreaker to scored a 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 come from behind victory at No. 5.
