FOREST GROVE – A hot start to the first half, paced by a torrid shooting performance by Kelly Peterson, propelled Whitman to a 71-55 victory over Pacific Saturday in Northwest Conference women’s basketball at the Pacific Athletic Center.

Peterson scored 19 of her game high 21 points in the opening 20 minutes, connecting 7 of 8 from the field with three three-pointers in the stanza.  She fueled an 8-2 run to open the game and a 31-13 surge over the first 12 minutes that proved to be all that the Missionaries (10-11, 5-7 NWC) needed to earn the win.

Hilary White added 12 points as Whitman shot 44.8 percent from the field (26-58), 6 of 16 from three-point range and 13 of 15 from the free throw line.  Michelle Krall pulled down 11 rebounds as the Missionaries out-boarded the Boxers 40-32.

Rochelle Reeves-Howe (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) led the Boxers (6-13, 3-9 NWC) with 14 points.  Mallory Goldammer (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) added nine.  Both players scored nine of their points in the first half.  Pacific finished shooting 36.7 percent (22-60) from the field and hit 4 of 14 from long range.

Whitman opened the game by scoring the first six points and pulled ahead 8-2 on a Krall jumper at the 16:35 mark.  After the Boxers closed to within five on a long Reeves-Howe jumper, Whitman put together a 16-5 run that culminated on a Peterson lay-in that gave the Missionaries a 29-11 lead at the midway point.

Reeves-Howe then used her jumper to set the Boxers on a 15-5 run, which brought the Boxers within eight on a Goldammer lay-in with 20 seconds left.  White hit a three-pointer as time expired as the Missionaries entered halftime with a 39-28 lead.

Pacific kept close over the first two minutes of the second half and were within nine when a Rebecca Sexton lay-in sparked an 18-5 run over the next nine minutes that gave the Missionaries their largest lead of 22 points, 60-38, with 11:51 to go.  Whitman matched Pacific nearly basket for basket the rest of the way, with the Boxers coming no closer than 16 points at the close of the contest.

The Boxers will close out their 2009-10 home schedule next Friday when they host Linfield.  Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.  Whitman returns home to host Pacific Lutheran on Friday.
