Of The Season

FOREST GROVE – Pacific ran into another long-range buzz saw Friday night as Whitworth knocked down 13 three-pointers en route to an 87-68 victory over the Boxers in Northwest Conference men’s basketball action at the Pacific Athletic Center.

The Pirates (18-2, 11-0 NWC), ranked No. 10 in the latest D3Hoops.com national poll, hit 13 of 31 from long range for the game and nailed nine treys in the second half.  David Riley and Jack Loofburrow combined for nine threes as Whitworth shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field for the contest.

Riley led Whitworth with 23 points, connecting on 8 of 13 from the field as the Pirates shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field.  Loofburrow came off the bench to score 17.  Nate Mongomery added 16 points and Eric Beal had 15 to go along with six assists and four steals.  Bo Gregg pulled down eight rebounds as the Pirates out-rebounded the Boxers 38-33.

Ross Bartlett (Sr., St. Helens, Ore.) notched his 11th double-double of the season and his third straight night of 20 points or more, scoring 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds.  LeMar Anglin (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) added 12 points and Colin Wester (Fr., Sherwood, Ore.) and Carson Bartlett (So., St. Helens, Ore.) each scored 10.  A.J. Gaulton (Sr., Pleasant Hill, Ore.) added eight assists.

Whitworth never trailed in the contest, but found it hard to shake the Boxers over the first 10 minutes.  The Pirates led by six when a jumper by Carson Bartlett and a Gaulton three-pointer to come within 10-9 at the 15:27 mark.  The deficit was still one point at the 13:09 mark before two Beal free throws started an 11-4 run, which culminated on a Montgomery jumper with 8:15 to go that gave the Pirates a 26-18 lead.

The Pirates built their first double digit lead on Montgomery’s free throw with 1:29 to go and Gregg’s trey as time expired gave Whitworth a 43-30 halftime lead.

Whitworth never saw the Boxers come closer than 12 points in the second half as the three-point machine started churning.  Wester brought Pacific within 12 on his three-pointer at the 16:14 mark, only to watch Riley answer back with a three of his own to start a short run that put the Pirates up by 19, 59-40.  Whitworth eventually built their biggest lead of 24 points, 71-47, on a Montgomery lay-in with 9:21 to go.

Pacific returns to action on Saturday as Whitman comes to town for a 6 p.m. matchup.  Whitworth travels to George Fox.
