A 16-point first half lead was not enough to hold off a strong second half Whitworth surge as the Pirates outscored the Boxers 41-23 in the stanza to beat the Boxers 66-52
FOREST GROVE – A 16-point first half lead was not enough for Pacific to overcome a tremendous second half surge from Whitworth Friday as the Pirates came from behind to beat the Boxers 66-52 in Northwest Conference women’s basketball action at the Pacific Athletic Center.
The Boxers (6-12, 3-8 NWC) bolted out to the early double-digit lead as the Pirates (11-9, 7-4 NWC) failed to hit a field goal in the first six minutes of the contest. Pacific held a 16-point lead with 7:04 to go before the Pirates closed the first half on a 18-6 run to come within four at halftime. Whitworth quickly closed the deal in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range to outscore the Boxers 41-23 in the stanza.
Pacific put together a strong shooting performance despite the loss, connecting on 47.8 percent (22-46) from the field, but hit just 2 of 6 from three-point range and 6 of 12 from the free throw line. Julianne Erbe (So., Canby, Ore.) led Pacific with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and Rochelle Reeves-Howe (Sr., Gresham, Ore.) added nine. Paige Jensen (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) pulled down 10 boards as the Boxers out-rebounded the Pirates 33-31.
Cassie Pilkinton led Whitworth with 16 points. Liz Horiatis added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Leah Pomante scored 11.
Whitworth went 0 for 9 from the field over the first six minutes of the contest, allowing the Boxers to coast to a 7-1 lead on Reeves-Howe’s three-pointer at the 15:44 mark. It wouldn’t be until midway through the half before Pacific truly attempted to break the game open, capping a 23-7 run on Jensen’s lay-in with 7:04 left.
The tables turned over the final seven minutes with the Boxers hitting 2 for 7 from the field as the Pirates went on an 18-6 run to close the half. Emily Travis came off the bench to score six of the points to fuel the run as Whitworth pulled to within 29-25 at the half.
Whitworth opened the second half by taking the lead on a pair of Pomante free throws that broke a 33-33 tie two minutes into the period. Pacific kept things close and trailed by just five points, 47-42, with 12:20 to go when a pair of Horiatis free throws sparked a 16-2 run over the next minutes. Pilkinton’s lay-in with 6:33 to go gave Whitworth their biggest lead of 19 points, 63-44, all but sealing the game for the Pirates.
Pacific returns to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Whitman in a 4 p.m. match-up. Whitworth plays at George Fox.
