BRANDAN MANTEI
Wins Three Events

FOREST GROVE – Brandan Mantei (Jr., Canby, Ore.) picked up a trio of victories Saturday and four other Pacific swimmers won two events each as the Boxers split their final dual of the season with the College of Idaho at the Forest Grove Aquatic Center.

Mantei’s victories in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle paced six event victories for the Pacific men, but numbers and an ill-timed disqualification worked in the Coyotes favor for a 95-76 victory.  Scott Kimura (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) also won two events for the Boxers.

The Pacific women won all but one event as Eileen Bringman (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio), Kristin Favillo (So., Caldwell, Idaho) and Allison Clark (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) won two event apiece to lead the Boxers to a 119-69 victory.

Mantei was a four-second winner in each of his events, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.95, the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.56 and the 100-yard freestyle in 50.88 seconds.  Kimura, meanwhile, pulled out a pair of close wins to keep the Boxers in contention.  He out-touched the Yotes’ Robert Turner in the 50-yard freestyle to win in 23.84 seconds and then was .40 seconds ahead of Kemp Smith in the 100-yard butterfly to win in 1:00.33.  Dylan Cramer (Fr., Caldwell, Idaho) was also a winner in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing in 17:59.04.

Pacific, however, was hampered in the team scoring by a disqualification in the 200-yard medley relay.  The loss of the 11 points allowed the Yotes to take the lead when they swept the 500-yard freestyle, led by a victory from Nick Young in 5:32.38.  Casey Walker added two victories in the 100-yard backstroke (55.42) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.28), which set a C of I school record and a NAIA meet qualifier, and closed out the win with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.82).  Smith also set a NAIA nationals qualifier with his mark of 18:01.47 in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

The Pacific women, meanwhile cruised to victory with their wins in 10 of the 11 events.  Bringman, swimming in what was likely her last Pacific dual, won the 200-yard freestyle in season best 2:06.12 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.74.  Favillo captured the 50-yard freestyle in 26.41 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 57.74 seconds.  Clark added wins in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.52 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.55.

Addie Schulz (Fr., Ketchikan, Alaska) won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 20:25.96 and Nicole Koch (Fr., Longmont, Colo.) won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.46.  Pacific also earned victories in the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.84) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.85).

Annie Younggren was the College of Idaho’s only women’s event winner as she took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:50.25.  Chrissie Younggren earned a NAIA nationals qualifying mark in a time trial of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:21.48.

The Pacific women improved to 2-8 on the season in duals, while the men dropped to 1-9.  College of Idaho fell to 0-6 on the women’s side and improved to 2-4 on the men’s side.

Pacific will now gear up for the Northwest Conference Championships, which take place Feb. 12-14 at the King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
