Nicole Koch reset her own record in the 200-yard butterfly, leading Pacific as they won their first swimming dual meets of the season over Willamette
FOREST GROVE – Nicole Koch (Fr., Longmont, Colo.) lowered her own record in the 200-yard butterfly by two seconds Friday night, leading the Pacific swim teams as they swept their way to their first Northwest Conference swim dual victories of the season over Willamette at the Forest Grove Aquatic Center.
Koch posted a time of 2:22.47 to win the event, beating her own previous record of 2:24.80 set in a dual against Lewis & Clark on Nov. 13. She also swam the third leg on the Boxers’ winning 400-yard medley relay team (4:26.99). In all, the Boxers won nine of 11 events to post a 113.5-76.5 victory over the Bearcats. The Pacific men won eight of 11 events as they surged to a 72-16 win.
Both victories were the first of the season for the Boxers and lifted dual meet records to 1-8 overall and 1-6 against NWC teams. Willamette dropped to 0-6 on the men’s side and a 1-5 mark on the women’s side.
Allison Clark (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) and Eileen Bringman (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) each won two events to bolster the team victory. Clark captured the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.98 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:38.93. Bringman won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.57 seconds and swam a season best in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:19.65.
Kristin Favillo (So., Caldwell, Idaho) captured the 200-yard freestyle in a season best of 2:05.61 and Julie Garner (Jr., Burns, Ore.) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:43.36. The Boxers also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season best time of 3:49.93.
Scott Kimura (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) and Dylan Cramer (Fr., Caldwell, Idaho) each won two events to lead Pacific in their lopsided men’s victory. Kimura won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.34 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.17 seconds. Cramer, meanwhile, set a 10-second season best in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:08.50 before capturing the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.50.
Brandan Mantei (Jr., Canby, Ore.) and Ben Griffin (Jr., Tacoma, Wash.) entertained in a close race in the 200-yard freestyle. Mantei won the race in 2:00.55, swimming as an exhibition athlete, while Griffin received credit for the points while finishing in 2:00.66. The Boxers also claimed wins in the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.70) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.46).
Ian MacGahan was Willamette’s lone winner on the men’s side, taking the 1,000-yard freestyle in 12:18.60. For the Willamette women, Jenna Larrow was a winner in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:38.58) while Lauren Ballinger won the 100-yard freestyle (57.48).
Pacific will wrap up the 2009-10 dual meet season on Saturday, hosting the College of Idaho in a non-conference dual at 11 a.m. Willamette travels to Pacific Lutheran.
