4 Years At Portland State

FOREST GROVE – Pacific University is once again looking to a former Portland State coach to lead the way for the Boxers’ new football program with today’s announcement of the hiring of Josh Fetter as defensive coordinator.

Fetter joins the Pacific staff after four years as the defensive line coach at Portland State and also brings to Forest Grove coaching experience at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.  At Pacific, Fetter will work directly with the defensive line and will coordinate recruiting efforts in Washington.

Head Coach Keith Buckley said Fetter stood out as someone close to him in terms of coaching philosophy.  Buckley coached against Fetter during his time as a defensive backs coach at UC Davis.  “It was apparent in the interview process that Josh and I are very similar in our approach to defense and our philosophy about defense,” Buckley said.  “Between the two of us it will be good to have experienced coaches on the defensive side to accomplish our goals in building the football program.”

Fetter said he is excited to have a chance to continue coaching in the Portland area and to be part of an exciting new program. “I’m ecstatic,” Fetter said.  “What an opportunity to build something from the ground up and to do something the right way.  I really like Coach Buckley’s vision and what he stands for.  Obviously, this is a great community and the people here at Pacific, from the faculty and staff to the students, impressed me.”

Josh FetterFetter spent the last four years as the defensive line coach at Portland State.  Like current Pacific offensive coordinator Jim Craft, Fetter was hired by Tim Walsh and was retained when Jerry Glanville took over the program in 2007.  Fetter experienced a high level of success in his four years.  He saw two of his lineman earn Honorable Mention All-Big Sky Conference honors in 2009.  All three of his regular starters earn All-Big Sky honors in 2007.

Buckley believes Fetter will be a great fit not only for the Pacific football program, but also for the University community.

“What really stuck out to me with Josh was both his passion not only for the game but for the well-being of the student-athlete,” Buckley said.  “You can tell right away that kids are going to love playing for him with passion and energy on the defensive end of the ball.  The people in the Pacific community are going to love being around Josh.”

In 2006, Fetter, coached defensive ends for Portland State with great success.  The Viking defense led the Big Sky in turnover margin, pass efficiency defense, sacks per game, tackles for loss, third-down defense, fourth-down defense and red zone defense.

Prior to his arrival at Portland State, Fetter spent five seasons at NCAA Division II Western State in Gunnison, Colo.  He spent three years as defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach.  He also served as assistant head coach.  Fetter began his coaching career at Central Washington, coaching the defensive tackles in 1996 and mentoring defensive ends from 1997 to 2000.  He was part of the coaching staff that oversaw Central Washington’s transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.

A graduate of the University of Idaho in 1996 with a degree in general studies.  He was a four-year letterwinner for the Vandals and a two-year starter in the defense.  His senior year, Fetter was the Inspirational Award winner and nominated team captain.  He was part of an Idaho defense that led NCAA Division I-FCS in rushing defense.

Born in Tacoma, Fetter resides in Tualatin.  He and his wife, Jahnna, are the proud parents of two children: son Michael (3) and daughter Delani (1).
