Pacific could not get the offense going as Lewis & Clark handed the Boxers some Halloween tricks in a three-set loss in the Boxers' home season finale
FOREST GROVE – On a Halloween night where Pacific played their final home match of the 2009 season, it was orange and black clad Lewis & Clark handing out nothing but tricks as the Pioneers handed the Boxers a three-set loss, 25-14, 25-9, 25-17, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at the Pacific Athletic Center.
The Boxers (7-15, 2-12 NWC) could not find a rhythm offensively all night, hitting just .029 for the match and no better than .062 in any set. Kelsy Takashima (So., Kaunakakai, Hawaii), Alexa Block (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Keleigh Kremers (So., Beeville, Texas) each had six kills to lead the Boxers. Jade Thompson (Fr., Marysville, Wash.) added 15 digs and Brittney Johnson (So., Beaverton, Ore.) had 12 assists.
Jessamy Holland was the only player with double digit kills, leading Lewis & Clark (13-10, 9-5 NWC) with 10 kills as the Pioneers hit .265 for the match. Leia Matsunaga added 31 assists and Sarah Hall had 12 digs.
Lewis & Clark never trailed in the opening set, surging ahead to take a 14-4 lead on a kill by Holland. After Thompson served the Boxers to within 14-7 on a pair of attack errors, Pacific would not win a point again off of their own serve. A Jennifer Dowdy service ace made it a 21-11 lead and a service error for the Boxers closed it out at 25-14.
The Pioneers proved more dominant in the second set, pulling away from a 1-1 tie to score 17 of the next 18 points. Holland strung together six winners, two on Dowdy kills, for the 6-1 lead and Margaret Dowling strung together 11 more, four off of aces, for a dominant 17-2 lead. Pacific would get no closer than 12 points as the Pioneers had 10 kills and no attack errors in the 25-9 win.
Pacific opened the third set with renewed fire, opening up a 7-4 lead on a L&C attack error and built a 14-8 advantage on a Kremers kill. The Pioneers came back, cutting the lead to 17-15 on a kill by Hall before winning the next 10 points to close out the match. Holland had two kills and the Boxers committed six attack errors in the string.
The Boxers will close out the 2009 season on the eastern Washington road trip, traveling to Whitworth on Friday and Whitman on Saturday. Lewis & Clark closes their season at home, hosting Linfield on Friday and Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
