Pacific claims their first season sweep of a conference opponent in recent history thanks to a strong singles effort in a 6-3 win over Puget Sound
BEAVERTON, Ore. - For the first time in recent program history, Pacific can boast a regular season sweep of a conference opponent as the Boxers came up big in the singles to post a 6-3 win over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
Cat Goya (Fr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Megan Yoshimoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii), Dayna Wong (Jr., Hilo, Hawaii, pictured) and Stephanie Velligas (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) all won their singles flights, backing up a strong doubles showing that allowed the Boxers to improved to 5-5 (5-5 NWC). The Loggers fell to 1-7 (1-7 NWC).
Goya used straight sets to beat Sam Taylor, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 while Yoshimoto was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Alissa Wolf at No. 2. Wong posted a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Devin Fields at No. 4 and Velligas was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Ashley Dombrow at No. 6. The Loggers received victories by Ada Yu at No. 3 and Jessica Gauger at No. 5.
In the doubles, Goya and Yoshimoto was an 8-3 winner over Taylor & Wolf at No. 1 and the team of Wong and Jaime Yoshino (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) was an 8-4 winner over Fields and Dombrow at No. 2. Yu and Nina Ho won the Loggers' lone doubles match at No. 3, defeating Velligas and Dawn Greene (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) 8-4.
Pacific will play two more matches this weekend before taking a well-deserved weekend off, hosting Whitman on Saturday and George Fox on Sunday. Puget Sound plays Saturday at Linfield.
