Pacific came up with one singles match too few as the Boxers fell to Lewis & Clark 5-4 in a women's tennis heartbreaker in Beaverton

BEAVERTON, Ore. - In the end it was one singles match too few for Pacific Friday as the Boxers dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

After winning two of three doubles sets to open the match with the lead, the Boxers (3-5, 3-5 NWC) were on the losing end of a pair of close singles flights that allowed the Pioneers (4-3, 4-3 NWC) to escape with the victory.

The No. 1 tandem of Cat Goya (Fr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) opened the day by handing L&C's Amalia Nilsson and Whitney DeBree their first loss of the season, pulling just ahead for a 9-7 victory.  At No. 2, Dayna Wong (Jr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Jaime Yoshino (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) had an easier time with Clio Beatty and Alix Dixon in an 8-3 win.

Stephanie Velligas (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Dawn Greene (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) took the Boxers' lone doubles loss, falling in the No. 3 flight 8-0 to Paige Earhart and Jill Coleman.

Yoshimoto and Velligas earned Pacific's victories in the singles.  Yoshimoto wrestled away a second set tiebreaker with DeBree to earn a straight set victory at No. 2, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).  Velligas was a straight set winner over Mika Yokoyama, 6-2, 6-2.  Lewis & Clark's Nilsson won at No. 1 over Goya, 7-5, 6-0, Earhart won at No. 3 over Yoshino, 6-3, 6-1, and Coleman was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Tessa Krebs (Sr., Puyallup, Wash.) at No. 5.

The match came down to a three-set battle between Wong and Beatty.  Wong battled back from a first set loss to take the second, then rallied to take the second set before engaging in a tight third set.  Wong saved two match points to force a tiebreaker, but it wasn't enough as Beatty pulled out the 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Pacific will take to the road on Saturday, playing Pacific Lutheran at 5 p.m. in Tacoma.  Because of expected bad weather conditions, the match is scheduled to be played at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
