FOREST GROVE - It was a nail biter that came down the final relay
Saturday, but in the end it was Pacific that outlasted Lewis &
Clark for the team's first dual meet victory of the season in Northwest
Conference swimming action at the Forest Grove Aquatic Center.
Trailing by four points entering the final event, the 200-yard
freestyle relay, the Boxers received a strong swim from the team of Ben
Griffin (So., Tacoma, Wash.), Wyeth Yogi (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii), Luke
Fuller (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Scott Kimura (So., McMinnville,
Ore.). The team pulled into the wall with a time of 1:38.56, 15
seconds ahead of the Pioneers to secure the 93-90 dual meet victory.
The Boxers (1-2, 1-2 NWC) won seven of the 10 events in the
meet. Sam Watanuki (Jr., Denver, Colo., pictured) won the 200-yard
freestyle in a season best of 1:56.68 and the 100-yard backstroke in a
season best of 59.05 seconds. Brandan Mantei (So., Canby, Ore.),
meanwhile, won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:03.17,
breaking the school record of 2:03.34 set by Joe Nannini in 2004.
Kai Seixas (Jr., San Pedro, Calif.) was a winner in the 1,000-yard
freestyle, finishing in a time of 12:07.11, and Kimura was an
individual winner in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking 59.84
seconds. The Boxers opened the day by winning the 200-yard medley
relay in a time of 1:59.14.
The Pacific women (2-2, 1-2 NWC) had some strong swims, winning four
events, but lost out in the numbers game as Lewis & Clark took the
team victory by a score of 121-81. Becky Hattersley (Fr., Clancy,
Wash.) led the way with a school record in the 50-yard freestyle.
Her winning time of 56.96 seconds broke the former record of 57.76
seconds set by Marya Hall in 2004.
Kristin Favillo (Fr., Caldwell, Idaho) won the 50-yard freestyle in
29.29 seconds and Eileen Bringman (So., Cleveland, Ohio) won the
100-yard backstroke in 1:03.26. The Boxers finished the day by
winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking a time of 1:46.43.
Lindsay Nixon and Claire Jordan led the way for the Lewis & Clark
women (3-2, 2-0 NWC), winning two events each. Nixon was a winner
in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.30) and the 100-yard butterfly
(1:02.70), while Jordan won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:26.05) and the
500-yard freestyle (5:34.44).
The Lewis & Clark men (0-3, 0-2 NWC) received individual victories
from Sam Palmer in the 50-yard freestyle (25.33), Noah Boring in the
100-yard freestyle (52.60) and from Pat Murray in the 100-yard
breaststroke (1:03.47).
Pacific returns to action next weekend, wrapping up the first half of the season at the Northwest Invitational in Spokane.
