Summary:
Men's Soccer: Win : 2-0 | Stats
Danny Williams and Jasem Jaihouni score within 18 seconds of each other as the Boxers win their final home men's soccer match with a 2-0 shutout of Willamette
FOREST GROVE - Danny Williams (Sr., Eugene, Ore.) and Jasem Jaihouni
(So., Portland, Ore., pictured) scored the match's only two goals within 19
seconds of each other Sunday, leading Pacific past Willamette 2-0 in
the Boxers' home Northwest conference men's soccer season finale at
Lincoln Park Stadium.
Williams scored the match's opening goal in the 19th minute.
Kizamu Tsutakawa (So., Seattle, Wash.) fed the ball to Williams on a
short cross. Williams then hammered away a one-timer from long
range for his ninth goal of the season.
Williams then paid it forward to Jaihouni just seconds later.
Pacific was awarded a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box, which he
lofted to just outside the goalie area. Jaihouni, who had just
entered the match, headed it in from five yards away to score his first
goal of the season.
With his goal, Williams moved within two of tying Duston Sackett on the
all-time scoring list with 32 goals. In addition, his three
points moved Williams to within two of the Boxers' all-time record with
73.
Pacific (10-4-4, 6-2-4 NWC) had their way with the Bearcats (3-12-1,
2-9-1 NWC) all afternoon. The Boxers outshot Willamette 27-8, put
12 shots on goal and had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. The
match also proved physical as 43 fouls were called and six cautions
issued between the two sides.
Willamette's best look at scoring for the match came in the 23rd
minute. Luke Lagattuta hit a shot from 25 yards out on a free
kick. The ball was deflected off of a Pacific defender and
eventually parried out of bounds by Pacific goalkeeper Andrew Stevermer
(So., Gillette, Wyo.).
The Boxers missed on a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 53rd
minute. After Williams had pulled Bennett out of position, Kevin
Fujimoto (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) found himself wide open at the top of
the eight-yard box. Fujimoto slipped and fell, but Brendan Kam
(Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) was in the right place to shoot from 10 yards,
but went high.
Stevermer earned credit for his sixth shutout of the season, making
four saves. The team now has eight shutouts on the season, one
short of the single season record of nine set in 1985. Bennett
finished with nine saves for the Bearcats.
Today's match was the final home match for two true seniors, Williams
and Jared Komo (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii). It was also the final match
for Brandon Porter (Jr., Canby, Ore.), who is on track to graduate in
May, but sat out after suffering a season-ending knee injury last
weekend at Linfield.
Pacific will wrap up the 2008 regular season on the road with matches
against the conference's top two teams. The Boxers will play at
second place Whitman on Friday and league-leading Whitworth on
Saturday. Willamette hosts Linfield on Wednesday before closing
the season at Puget Sound on Saturday.
