Pacific scores an early first half goal and two second half strikes to built the momentum for a solid 3-1 men's soccer victory over Puget Sound
FOREST
GROVE - An early first half goal and a second half scoring flurry
provided the momentum Pacific needed to post a 3-1 victory over Puget
Sound in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at Lincoln Park
Stadium.
Danny Williams (Sr., Eugene, Ore., pictured) connected
in the first half, while Kizamu Tsutakawa (So., Seattle, Wash.) and
Travis Birrell (So., Seattle, Wash.) added second half strikes to give
Pacific (9-4-4, 5-2-4 NWC) their third win in fourth matches. Puget
Sound (8-7-2, 6-4-2 NWC), meanwhile, dropped their second straight
contest.
Pacific was offensively dominant throughout the match.
The Boxers outshot the Loggers 20-10 and held the 8-5 edge in shots on
goal and an impressive 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Williams
needed just four minutes to net his eighth goal of the season. He stole
the ball from a UPS defender just at the top of the Loggers' 18-yard
box, and then managed to dribble the ball around Loggers' goalkeeper
Greg Saetrum to tap in from five yards away.
The Loggers put
together a pair of solid first half opportunities, but could not
convert either into goals. Ameer Mohit put up a shot from point-blank
range in the 24th minute, which was deflected by a diving Jared Komo
(Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) before being gathered up by Stevermer. Kyle
Johnson created a breakaway opportunity in the 45th minute, but
Stevermer won the one-on-one battle with a save on Johnson's six-yard
attempts.
Tsutakawa needed just 31 seconds to provide the Boxers
the second half insurance goal. Off the opening kickoff, Birrell
crossed the ball into the penalty area, where Tsutakawa was in place to
head in his second goal of the year from five yards out.
Birrell
made it a 3-0 Pacific lead in the 61st minute. Tsutakawa started the
play with a well-placed corner kick to the central area of the penalty
box. Williams had a look with a header, which was saved by Saetrum. The
ball rolled to the feet of Birrell, who rocketed it home from
point-blank range.
Cole Peterson prevented the Pacific shutout
with 55 seconds left to play, scoring off of a ball that ricocheted off
of a couple of Pacific defenders.
Stevermer finished with four saves in the victory, while Saetrum made five stops in the loss.
Pacific
will finish their 2008 home schedule on Sunday, hosting Willamette at
1:30 p.m. Puget Sound continues their road trip, playing at Linfield.
