Loggers Come From Behind Twice To Beat Boxers

Summary:

Women's Soccer: Loss : 3-2 | Stats

Sam Lee and Jenny Novak score goals, but Puget Sound comes back in both the first and second halves to hand Pacific a 3-2 women's soccer loss and keep their undefeated NWC season alive

FOREST GROVE - Jenny Moore provided the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute Saturday, giving No. 6 ranked Puget Sound a 3-2 victory in a closely contested Northwest Conference women's soccer match at Lincoln Park Stadium.

Moore scored her sixth goal of the year on a breakaway from midfield. She ran along the far sideline and then dribbled around a pair of Pacific defenders into the 18-yard box, setting up an easy eight-yard shot past Pacific goalkeeper Erin Ichimura (So., Wailuku, Hawaii).

The goal capped a match that saw the Loggers (15-1-0, 11-0-0 NWC) have to come back in both halves after the Boxers (5-11-1, 4-8-1 NWC) score on a pair of spirited attacks in each stanza. It was only the second match this season where a team has scored more than one goal on the Loggers.

UPS was dominant by the numbers, outshooting Pacific 21-10 with an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.

Despite being outshot 12-6 in the first half, it was Pacific's Sam Lee (Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) who opened scoring in the 14th minute. Lauren Kanda (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) started the play, stealing the ball from a UPS midfielder and quickly passing to Lee. Lee took the one-timer from 30 yards out, which sailed high over the head of Loggers' goalie Callie Wolfer for a 1-0 lead.

It was Janece Levien, the Loggers' and the conference's top scorer, who provided the equalizer in the 38th minute. A Pacific foul lined Levien up for the free kick from just off the top of the 18-yard box. She lofted a high ball that sailed over the head of Pacific's Sydney Vincent (So., Portland, Ore.), who made her first start in goal this season.

Levien had two more opportunities to give UPS the lead in the waning minutes of the half. She dribbled around three Pacific defenders in the 40th minute before hooking a shot wide and rifled another angling attempt in the 43rd minute, but Vincent was able to punch the ball away for her sixth save of the half.

Jenny Novak (So., Dexter, Ore.) put Pacific back ahead in the 49th minute. Ashley Kanda (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) found Novak with a cross along the ground. She wasted little time in beating Wolfer to the right side for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.

Fiona Gornick tied it up again in the 57th minute. Moore found Gornick in the box on the left side with a pass from the sideline. Gornick easily moved around one Pacific defender and lofted a line drive to the far side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Lee came up with Pacific's final chance late in the match, taking a soft roller from 15 yards out that was easily saved by Wolfer.

Vincent finished with the six first half saves and was replaced by Ichimura at halftime, who came up with two in the loss. Wolfer finished with four saves.

Pacific concludes their 2008 home schedule on Sunday, hosting Willamette at 11 a.m. Puget Sound plays Sunday at Linfield.
