2006-07 Men's Golf Season Review
CLIMBING
THE LADDER: With a young core of players, the Pacific men's golf
team continued to make a steady climb up the leader of the Northwest Conference
standings. After finishing in fifth place in last year's championship standings,
the Boxers moved up to fourth place with 16 points, one point ahead of
fifth place Puget Sound and just three points behind third place Pacific
Lutheran.
It was not a for sure proposition, however, as the Boxers had to rebound from a fifth place finish at the NWC Fall Classic. The team showed well at the NWC Spring Classic, finishing third behind a first place tie between Linfield and Whitworth. The Boxers used a pair of sixth place finishes from sophomore Dan Cashmere and freshman Tim Andrew, who joined the team between the fall and spring seasons.
At the NWC Championship tournament, the Boxers turned in a fine effort, but not fine enough to keep pace with strong rounds from Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran. Pacific finished fourth with a team score of 910, six strokes behind third place Linfield. Taryn Braseth led the Boxers with 10th place finish. Andrew finished 11th and Dan Cashmere placed 13th.
ROCK THE CASHMERE: After a brilliant first year where he was acknowledged as one of the nation's top freshmen, Dan Cashmere continued to provide a steadying presence in his sophomore season. Cashmere finished no worse than 13th in a tournament all season, with his 13th place finish coming at the NWC Championships. He opened the spring season by winning the Willamette Invitational, finishing the tournament two strokes under par as the Boxers won the team title.
During the fall schedule, Cashmere rebounded from a 10th place finish at the season opening Pacific Four-Way to finish in the top-five in his last three events of the season. He turned in a round of 71 to finish third at the Linfield Invitational and then finished fourth at the prestigious Mary Hardin-Baylor Fall Invitational, which pitted Cashmere against some of the top golfers in the west region.
TEARIN'
TARYN: As the spring season progressed, junior Taryn Braseth came
into his own as a collegiate golfer, turning into perhaps the most consistent
player on the Pacific roster. Braseth finished in the top-10 in all four
spring competitions he competed in and was in the top-10 in all but one
tournament on the entire schedule.
Braseth came up big for the Boxers at the NWC Fall Classic, finishing just behind Dan Cashmere to place fifth. In the process, Braseth shot the team's lowest score in the second round with a 75. At the NWC Championships, Braseth led the Boxers' efforts with a 10th place finish, carding a three-round total of 225. The Vernonia, Ore., native, however, was unable to hold onto a tie for third place that he held after the tourney's first two rounds.
THE NEW KID IN TOWN: Tim Andrew did not join the Pacific golf team until before the spring season. After his performance, however, head coach Richard Warren wishes he could have been with the team the entire year. Andrew figured into the mix in each of the Boxers' spring tournaments. At the NWC Spring Classic, Andrew tied with Cashmere for sixth place with a two-round score of 153. Andrew was also in a tie for third place with Taryn Braseth after two rounds of the NWC Championships before fading to a respectable 11th place finish. Andrew was the top placing newcomer in the tournament.
